McMaster University recognizes that the University and surrounding Hamilton area, including their nature spaces, are situated on traditional territories shared between the Haudenosaunee confederacy and Anishnaabe nations. These lands are protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum belt. The wampum uses the symbolism of a dish to represent the territory, and one spoon to represent that the people are to share the resources of the land and only take what they need.

Nature at McMaster is so excited to host a guided hike series this fall. If you’re interested in learning more about the nature around us, join us for a hike – or four!


The hikes are as follows: 


September 5th — Nature Hike with Nature at McMaster Staff


Learn a little bit about everything with some nature experts on our team. This hike is in Cootes Paradise. We start on campus at Miller’s Grove, near the Altitude Tower, and will walk to Sassafras Point.


September 12th — Insect Hike with Noah Stegman


Learn about insects in Cootes Paradise with PhD student and Nature at McMaster Coordinator Noah Stegman! We start on campus at Millers Grove, near the Altitude Tower.


September 26th — Tree Hike with Steve Burgess


Learn about all the trees that McMaster Forest has to offer with arborist Steve Burgess! The hike starts at the entrance to McMaster Forest, 1175 Lower Lions Club Rd.


October 3rd — Mushroom Hike with Carlos Colangelo


Learn about the mushrooms and fungi that McMaster Forest has to offer with PhD mycology student Carlos Colangelo! The hike starts at the entrance to McMaster Forest, 1175 Lower Lions Club Rd.
