In January of this year, Nature at McMaster re-constructed a marsh at McMaster West Campus to support more biodiversity. Now that spring has sprung, it’s the perfect time to re-introduce native plants and wildflowers to rejuvenate this area! Invasive plant species also take advantage of the warming weather to grow and spread, so it’s an important time to remove these plants to make space for native species. Register at our google form signup sheet (link)! This event is open to everyone.
Event Overview:
Help us add native plants to the new McMaster marsh and Food Forest to increase biodiversity and attract even more species to the area! We will also be removing invasive species to give native plants more space to grow.
To be Planted:
– Native wetland plants
– Native trees
Nature at McMaster will provide the plants, gloves, and all necessary tools for this event. You are welcome to bring your own planting supplies as well if you prefer, but make sure they do not get mixed up with Nature at McMaster’s supplies.
Bring/Wear:
– Comfortable, closed-toe, durable shoes (mud proof rubber boots if you have any)
– Long pants and long socks
– Water bottles (there is no drinking water on site, so make sure to bring enough for the whole event!)
– Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses
Accessibility Notes:
There are no washrooms available on site. The nearest washrooms are at the Mary Keyes Residence.
We will be working in muddy, uneven terrain.
Planting trees may require kneeling on the ground and other physically taxing activities. We encourage attendees to consider pairing up with another event attendee and dividing roles (for example, one person digs holes and the other person plants the plants and fills in the holes).
If you are unsure how to use any of the tools provided, please ask any Nature at McMaster staff in attendance and we would be happy to assist you.
If you feel unwell at any point during the event, please inform a Nature at McMaster staff member immediately.
If you have any accessibility questions or concerns, please let us know and we will be sure to address them to the best of our ability. You can email us at nature@mcmaster.ca.
