Tree Planting with the McMaster Engineering Society Sustainability Team!

Non-native plants often thrive in our ecosystems, but they can cause big problems. These species can they invade natural spaces, choking out beautiful native trees that wildlife need. Help us remove invasive plants and plant native plants on campus, providing food and shelter for native wildlife! This event is co-hosted by the McMaster Engineering Society Sustainability Team and Nature at McMaster. Register for this event at our Eventbrite (link).
Event Details:
- Date: Wednesday, April 8, 2026
- Time: 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
- Location: Meet at the west entrance to Mary E. Keyes Residence on McMaster campus. Nature at McMaster staff will lead you to the planting site.
Activities:
- Planting: we will plant native trees and shrubs to create vibrant habitat around the vernal ponds at West Campus!
- Invasive Plant Removal: we will remove non-native European Buckthorn shrubs that are crowding out native species and degrading the habitat around our vernal ponds.
Bring/Wear:
- Comfortable, closed-toe, durable shoes (mud proof if you have any)
- Long pants and long socks
- Ensure you wear clothing and shoes that you will not mind getting dirty
- Water bottles
- Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses
- Bug spray
Nature at McMaster will provide all the tools and plants necessary for this event.
Accessibility Notes:
- There are no washrooms available on site. The nearest washrooms are at the Mary Keyes Residence.
- We will be working in muddy, uneven terrain.
- Planting trees may require kneeling on the ground. For those for whom this is challenging, we recommend pairing up with another event attendee and dividing roles (for example, one person digs holes and the other person plants the plants and fills in the holes).
- If you are unsure how to use any of the tools provided, please ask any Nature at McMaster staff in attendance and we would be happy to assist you.
- If you feel unwell at any point during the event, please inform a Nature at McMaster staff member immediately.
- If you have any accessibility questions or concerns, please let us know and we will be sure to address them to the best of our ability.
