McMaster University recognizes that the University and surrounding Hamilton area, including their nature spaces, are situated on traditional territories shared between the Haudenosaunee confederacy and Anishnaabe nations. These lands are protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum belt. The wampum uses the symbolism of a dish to represent the territory, and one spoon to represent that the people are to share the resources of the land and only take what they need.

Jen and Brittany need your help updating several nature sanctuaries’ biodiversity databases. Knowing what species are present and where they are means we can better protect them now and for future generations. With more eyes on the ground, we might even spot a few new or rare species! Now more than ever, we need to come together and ensure the continued protection of these natural spaces.


Please note this is not a nature outing – participants will be moving at a self-led pace and using their own knowledge to identify and record the species they find.  Some people may choose to focus on a specific group (ex. birds, plants, insects) that they are most knowledgeable about. We will not be covering what species to expect or how to identify species. Participants are free to use iNaturalist to record their observations, which will be added to the appropriate property project.


Each event must have at least 5 participants registered; otherwise, it will be cancelled. Directions are provided upon registration. Email stewardship@hamiltonnature.org for any questions.
